The American economy appears to be improving, which means that more jobs will be added as the summer goes on. But the reality of fickle employers is simple; they may not want to hire a pregnant employee. Even more troubling, many employers may not understand the rules and regulations that protect pregnant employees. Because of this, employees who are expecting may be subject to improper actions and lost wages.

Indeed, there are remedies that employees who are wronged can pursue; but there are a few things that every pregnant employee should know in order to protect themselves. This post will highlight them. 

Review your employee handbook – By doing this, you will know about how maternity leave and time off for prenatal appointments work in your organization. However, in many small businesses, there may not be a handbook. If this is the case, it is important to talk with your supervisor to fashion a plan to have the proper time off so that you can meet your obligations.

Don’t be afraid to ask for time off – You may not have experienced it, but it is likely that you will have to deal with the nausea, aches and pains and that come with a typical pregnancy. Because of the time off that you will likely need, it is important to speak up about your need for time off, despite your fears that you may be replaced.

Know the size of your company – Knowing how big your company is can help you understand whether federal anti-pregnancy discrimination laws apply to your company.
