Women, minorities face discrimination in tech fields

Women and minorities who are looking for tech jobs in California may still face discrimination. At Facebook, Yahoo and Apple, African - Americans hold 3 percent or fewer of the leadership positions. In 2015, only 11 percent of leadership positions in Silicon Valley were held by women. Advocates say many of these companies fail to reach out to a diverse population or expect those populations to have more qualifications than white men. Women also continue to face sexual harassment, and in some cases, it is part of the interview process. When women attempt to report these problems, some find it marks them as troublemakers.

High rate of sexual harassment in fast food industry

California fast food workers might be interested in a survey by Hart Research Associates showing that 40 percent of women who work in the fast food industry have been subject to sexual harassment on the job. Almost 30 percent reported more than one incident of harassment. Incidents included sexual comments, touching and kissing.

The importance of integrating disabled employees into a business

California employers may be surprised to learn that nearly one-third of discrimination charges filed through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2015 involved disability issues. Many large corporations have been affected by such legal entanglements. For example, Lowe's recently settled a suit for more than $8 million.

The growing practice of litigation financing

Some California employees who are pursuing a lawsuit against their employer may have another option besides finding an attorney to work on a contingency basis. Litigation financing is the practice of funding a lawsuit. In exchange, the investor gets a portion of the recovery. If the litigation is unsuccessful, it is not necessary to repay the investor. Both plaintiffs and defendants may benefit from litigation financing, and investors work with both companies and individuals.
